Each summer in Northern Virginia, there are several summer activities for adults, kids, and families. Here are some of the main activities going on this summer near Arlington and around Northern Virginia.

Weekly Farmers Markets

On different days throughout the summer, you’ll find various Farmer’s Markets around Northern Virginia. Not only can you find fresh, delicious fruit at these markets, but there’s also live music, food trucks, pastries, ethnic foods, gourmet cheeses, and much more. This summer, Arlington has 8 Farmer’s Markets, including: 

  • Arlington Farmers Market 
    • When: Every Saturday, year-round
    • Time: 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (April-December); 9 a.m. – noon (January-March)
    • Where: 14th Street, between North Courthouse Rd. and North Veitch St. 
  • Ballston Farmers Market 
    • When: Thursdays, June-November
    • Time: 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. 
    • Where: Welburn Square, 901 N. Taylor St. 
  • Cherrydale Farmers Market 
    • When: Saturdays, June-November
    • Time: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
    • Where: Dorothy Hamm Middle School 
  • Fairlington Farmers Market 
    • When: Sundays, May-November
    • Time: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
    • Where: North 15th St., near Courthouse Metro
  • Lubber Run Farmers Market 
    • When: Saturdays
    • Time: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. (April-November)
    • Where: 4401 N. Henderson Rd., Barrett Elementary School
  • Columbia Pike Farmers Market 
    • When: Sundays, year-round
    • Time: 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
    • Where: Fillmore Shopping Center Parking Lot
  • Rosslyn Farmers Market 
    • When: Wednesdays, June-November
    • Time: 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.
    • Where: Central Place Plaza, North Lynn St., and North Moore St. 
  • Westover Farmers Market 
    • When: Sundays
    • Time: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. (May-November); 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. (December-April)
    • Where: Washington Blvd. and N. McKinley Rd. 

Concerts in Cherry Hill Park

Another free activity to enjoy in Northern Virginia is concerts every week at Cherry Hill Park in Falls Church. The Summer Concerts in the Park is hosted by the Falls Church Preservation and Improvement Society and the Recreation and Parks Department. Concerts started this year on June 23 and will continue until August 4. Come down to the park each Thursday at 7 p.m. to enjoy live music from local bands and musicians. 

Arlington County Fair

One of the best family-friendly activities in Northern Virginia is the Arlington County Fair. Each year for a week, Arlington’s Thomas Jefferson Community Center is transformed into a colorful fairground. The Arlington County Fair features competitive exhibits, local talent, midway rides, games, live outdoor music, and several vendors. Some fair favorites include pony rides, funnel cakes, and carnival games. 

You can check out the Arlington County Fair from August 17-21 with various hours of activities. Admission to the fair is free; you can buy ride tickets online or at the fair when you get there. 

U.S. Marine’s Sunset Parade

If you want to do something a little different, consider checking out the U.S. Marine’s Sunset Parade every Tuesday from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. The parade is open to the public at no charge, and reservations aren’t necessary. Just bring a lawn chair or blanket to the Marine Corps War Memorial and listen to the music of “The Commandant’s Own”, The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, and precision drill by the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. This event takes place from June 14 – August 9. 

2022 Columbia Pike Movie Nights

If you’re looking for a free, family-friendly activity, why not see a movie? From July 8-August 22, you can bring your own chairs and blankets and watch a movie under the stars with your loved ones. Fridays, movies are shown at Arlington Mill and Saturdays at Penrose Square. All movies start at sunset, around 8-8:30 p.m., and are shown in English with Spanish subtitles. You can even bring your pet–as long as they’re on a leash. Check out this year’s movie dates here
